Mariamman Theppakulam

Madurai Vandiyoor  Theppakulam The Mariamman or Vandiyoor Theppakulam is a beautiful square tank spreading over a huge area of almost 16 acres, located about 5Kms East of Meenakshi Temple.
The teppakulam was constructed by ThirumalaiNayakkar in 1645, about three kilometers east of the temple

The deities of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar are taken in a float, called “Teppam”, decorated with flowers and illuminated with hundred of lights during Jan/Feb. This float is taken around the tank to the sound of traditional music.

It is strange to note that while dig this tank, there was a idol of Vinayagar. The statue is seven feet height made on single stone , and is called “Arulmigu Mukuuruni Vinayagar” installed at Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple by King Thirumalai Nayak .
